Hi! Welcome to today's experiment, where we will be making sugar scrubs!

  • Sugar scrubs are skincare products that exfoliate your skin

First, let's dive into the science behind sugar scrubs and why they leave you with soft and glowy skin.

  • Sugar scrubs combine the physical exfoliating action of the sugar and humectants

Exfoliate: When you use a substance (like sugar!) to rub off the dead skin cells of your body

Humectants: A substance that absorbs moisture (like shea butter, coconut oil, or even honey!)

  • Oil keeps your skin hydrated because it traps the moisture in your skin

The sugar scrub gently buffs any dead skin cells

  • Your skin is producing new cells right now! What you see on the top layer of the skin is your epidermis, and there are even layers of skin below that.

  • Your skin produces new cells like a conveyor belt; At the bottom of the epidermis, new skin cells are made, and they slowly move to the top over a few weeks. When they reach the surface of your skin, they die.

  • Eventually, the skin cells at the top flake off. Even though you can't see it, in a year, you shed 9 pounds worth of dead skin cells!

  • Too many dead skin cells cause dullness and dryness within your skin, which is why we use sugar scrubs!

When you use sugar scrubs, it's important to use it gently, because it could cause irritation!

The Experiment
