Speedway STEM Program 2026
We partnered with the STEM Council at Newark Academy to help serve students at the Speedway school by teaching them more about STEM and problem solving! We also created service opportunities for other students. Thank you so much to Ms. Fischer, Ms. Berlin, the volunteers, the chaperones, and Mr. Grossen with the STEM Council for making this possible! We had a total of five weekly sessions in the spring and lots of fun!
There were two classes that alternated with around 20-30 students in each class.
Day 1
Spagetti Marshmallow Challenge (4/13)

Last Monday,we hosted our first STEM enrichment session at the Speedway Academy in Newark! Students learned through trial and error how to build the sturdiest spaghetti tower, mimicking techniques in engineering. Our woman in STEM spotlight was Emily Warren Roebling, who was key to building the Brooklyn Bridge
Day 2
Egg Drop! (4/23)

In our second session, we challenged students to protect an egg using the given materials like tissue paper, cardboard, cotton balls, and more. Our woman in STEM spotlight was Katherine Johnson, a pioneering NASA scientist, who was vital to space missions and breaking barriers!
Robotic Hand! (4/30)

In our third session, we challenged students to make a robotic hand with materials like cardboard, string, straws, and tape. Our woman in STEM spotlight was Ayanna Howard, a leading engineer who designs robots and AI systems.
Cardboard Cars (5/4)

In our fourth session, we challenged students to make their own cars with materials like cardboard, bamboo skewers, string, and tape. Our woman in STEM spotlight was Sally Ride, the first female astronaut who went to space.
